The Purpose Behind the Project
Why This Project Matters
Spiritual Centre
The building on Masons Avenue naturally contains 18 steps mirroring the sacred Sabarimala ascent. Consecrated on 14 September 2008, the temple welcomes hundreds of devotees every Mandalam and Makaravilakku season, offering daily Poojas, Abisheekam, Homam, and Irrumudi throughout the year.
Community Service
The temple's 3,600 sq ft Brotherhood Hall hosts spiritual programmes, cultural events, marriages, and discourses. Kitchen and dining facilities serve volunteers and worshippers alike, embodying the Ayyappa tradition of selfless seva in every gathering.
UK Hindu Diaspora
The Sree Ayyappa Seva Sangam was established in 1980 — from monthly pujas at Kensington Primary School to a permanent consecrated temple in Harrow. This 45-year journey belongs to every devotee who kept the flame alive. Project Sacred 18-Steps secures the temple's future for those yet to arrive.
Sacred Legacy
The 18 sacred steps are the living symbol of the Ayyappa pilgrimage — the Sabarimala ascent made in the heart of London. The renovation will restore them with authentic materials, and donor names will be permanently inscribed into the temple structure.

The Vision
Masterplan & Architecture
Proposed Temple Expansion
The renovation plan significantly expands the usable sacred space, restoring the main sanctum and adding purpose-built areas for daily puja, community gatherings, and pilgrimage preparation.
Shrine Layout
Each shrine is repositioned in accordance with Agama Shastra principles, ensuring correct orientation, proportions, and ritual flow for all deities housed within the temple.
Accessibility
The redesign prioritises inclusivity — level access, dedicated seating for elderly devotees, and clear sightlines to all shrines so that every worshipper can participate fully.
Future-Ready Facilities
Modern infrastructure is being built into the structure: improved ventilation, lighting designed around puja timings, expanded kitchen facilities, and a multi-use community hall.
